The Theory Test

  • The Theory Test for Car Drivers was introduced in July 1996 to help improve Road Safety, by

ensuring that new drivers have a wide knowledge of topics such as attitude, alertness, road and traffic signs, motorways, vulnerable road users

  • You must have a provisional licence to book your theory test

  • You can take the theory test from your 17th birthday onwards

  • The Theory Test consists of 2 parts : A Multiple Choice Theory Test and a Hazard Perception Test.

  • You book & take them together as one test & you must pass both parts to pass the test.

Theory test Questions

  • The 1st part of the Theory Test consists of 50 multiple choice questions and it is computer based and the questions are answered by touching the screen. You can have short practise session before starting the actual test to get used to the system.

  • The minimum pass mark is 43 out of 50 and you are allowed 57 minutes to complete the test.

  • After an optional 3 minute break you will start the Hazard Perception Element of the test.

Hazard Perception Test

  •  The hazard perception element consists of 14 film clips of every day road scenes; 13 of these clips will contain only one developing hazard and 1 clip will contain two developing hazards.

  • You are marked on the number of hazards that you correctly identify and each hazard is scored from 1 to 5.

  • A developing hazard is something which may cause you to have to take action such as changing speed and/or direction. The quicker you identify the hazard the higher your score will be.

  • To pass you must score a minimum of 44 out of 75 available points.

  • If you pass both the Theory and the Hazard Perception parts you'll get a pass certificate at the test centre

  • Your pass certificate number lasts for 2 years. You must pass your practical test within this time or you'll have to re-take the theory test

  • If you fail you will get a letter which tells you which parts you need to practise.  You will have to wait 3 working days before you can re-take it.

  •  You must have passed the Theory and Hazard Perception Tests before a Practical Test can be booked.

  • The Theory Test can be booked by calling 0300 200 11 22 between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday or on line here:

•If you have an old style Paper Licence you must bring both your Paper Licence and a valid Passport.

Useful Information

  • You must hold a valid Provisional Licence & be aged 17 years or over to learn to drive a car, (unless in receipt of a Full Disability Allowance when you can obtain a Provisional Licence at 16 years of age).  Advanced Driver Training and Refresher Lessons, require a Full Licence.

  • If you wish to practice your driving you must have an accompanying driver who is over 21 years of age and has held a full UK Driving Licence for 3 years which must still be valid. They must be qualified to drive the type of vehicle you are learning in, eg they must have a full manual licence if they're supervising you in a manual car

  • It is illegal to drive on the motorway when practising with relatives or friends. You can go on the motorway   with and approved driving instructor in a car with dual controls and "L" plates.

  • You must be insured to use the car, if its your own car you'll have your own insurance, if its someone else's car make sure the owners insurance covers you as a learner driver or take out an insurance policy that covers you to drive that car as a learner. You can get an unlimited fine and up to 8 penalty points for driving whilst uninsured.

  • All Learner Drivers must display "L” Plates in a conspicuous position on the front and rear of the car.

  • You must tell the DVLA if you suffer from; or have in the past, any condition that may affect your ability to drive, failure to do so is a criminal offence and could incur a fine.

  • You must have passed the theory test before you can book and take the practical test, but you can start your practical lessons before passing the theory test.

The Practical Test

  • Once you have passed your Theory Test you can book and take the Practical Test.

  • It is conducted by a DVSA Examiner, takes approximately 40 minutes and will test that you can drive safely and can demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the Highway Code. There are 5 parts to it:

  1. At the beginning of the test is an Eyesight Test. You must be able to read a vehicle number plate at a distance of 20 Metres for a vehicle with a new style number plate, or 20.5 Metres for a vehicle with an old style number plate.  If you need glasses or contact lenses to read the number plate then you must wear them whenever you drive.

If you fail this, the test will not continue and your test fee will be lost.

2.You will also be asked 2 questions relating to vehicle safety and maintenance. One "tell me" question before          you start driving and one "show me" question whilst driving.. If you answer one or both questions

incorrectly a driving fault will be recorded.

3.Most test routes involve town driving and often single and dual carriageway roads with speed limits of                  more than 30mph but not motorways. you'll be asked to pull up and move away during the test from the                side of the road, at an angle from behind a parked vehicle and on a hill.

You may be asked to do an emergency stop.

    4. Reversing your vehicle:

You'll have to do one of the following:

  • Pull up on the right hand side of the road and reverse back for 2 car lengths and then move off and re join the traffic
  • park in a parking bay either driving in and reversing out or reversing in and driving out. the examiner will tell

        you which to do.

  • Parallel park at the roadside.

   5.  Independent Driving:

You'll have to drive for approximate 20 mins by either

  • following directions from a Sat Nav (the examiner will provide the Sat Nav, you can't use your own)
  • following traffic signs

The examiner will pull you up at the side of the road to this part of the test. Don't worry if you forget the                  directions or go wrong. You just need to show that you can make your own decisions and you can ask for a          reminder of where to go. You will also be told when this section of the test has finished.

  • You will be told at the end of the test if you have been successful. The examiner will offer you a de-brief on your test result whether you are successful or not.

  • The Examiner is looking for a safe, systematic and smooth drive. Fifteen driving or "minor" faults, are permitted. If you accumulate more than fifteen driving faults or get one "serious" or "dangerous fault" ("major") faults you will fail the test.

Driving faults - not potentially dangerous but if you keep making the same fault it could become serious.

Serious Faults - something potentially dangerous

Dangerous fault - This is actually dangerous to you, the public/property or the examiner

  • If you fail, you can book another test straight away but cannot take another test for at least ten working days.
